The French Lieutenants Woman

The French Lieutenants Woman

Mark Healey’s new adaptation of John Fowles’ classic novel sees a desperate writer struggling to come to terms with, and keep track of, his literary creations. As ambiguously drawn outcast Sarah Woodruff, pejoratively known in Lyme Regis as the “French Lieutenant’s Whore”, finds her strength, she begins to shape the narrative in ways unanticipated by her surprised creator. As the author muses on the impossibility of writing a traditional novel in the face of independently acting characters, conflicting motives intertwine with the battle between the conscious and the unconscious in this moving and thought provoking production.
