Set in Salford in 1880, HOBSON'S CHOICE is the story of cantankerous and obstinate boot shop owner, Henry Horatio Hobson. A widower with a fondness for a drink, Hobson tries to get the better of his three 'uppish' daughters and avoid the expense of a dowry by decreeing ‘no marriages’. His plans go awry when eldest daughter Maggie sets her sights on her father's master bootmaker – the exceedingly shy Will Mossop.
HOBSON'S CHOICE is an irresistible story, brimming with rich and wonderfully written characters. Painting a hilarious portrait of class and gender in Victorian England, it remains as entertaining, relevant and radical today as it did when it was written almost 100 years ago.
